Welcome to Sunrise Coal

Sunrise Coal, LLC, a wholly owned subsidiary of Hallador Energy Company, owns and operates an underground coal mine located in Carlisle, Indiana. Sunrise mines approximately three million tons per year and sells about 90 percent of its coal to several Indiana utilities. Customers take delivery via Sunrise’s 100-car double rail loop with four-hour certified batch load-out. The loop is connected to both the CSX Railroad and possesses some running rights to the Indiana Rail Road (INRD).

The 290 employees at Sunrise operate four units of underground mining equipment using the room-and-pillar method. Our No. 5 coal seam is 350'-440' deep and is accessed through a 2,400' drivable, dual-use slope.

Learn More about Hallador Energy Company

Nearly all of Sunrise’s operations were built in house. We excavated all the topsoil and subsoil necessary for the surface facilities, erected two wash plants, sunk the 2,400’ entry slope, built the 69,000 KVA substation, set the collars for the airshafts, set numerous surface beltlines, and built the grade for the 100-car double rail loop. Our in-house talent has enabled us to develop coal mines for up to a third less than competitors. Additionally, Sunrise holds one of the highest efficiency rankings among all Indiana coal mines as measured by tons per man hour.
